What We Do
Parenting KI was first established in 2004 by a group of volunteers and service providers who recognised the lack of services to meet parents and their families’ needs across Kangaroo Island. The group was successful in securing a grant through FaHCSIA. Additional successful applications have been made over the years that have allowed the program to continue.
In March of 2015 we were successful in gaining funding through the Federal Government Department of Social Services for the next 5 years. The purpose of the grant is ‘to strengthen relationships, support family and community functioning, and reduce the cost of family breakdown’. Parenting KI is funded to provide early intervention and prevention services and resources that are aimed at improving children’s development and wellbeing and supporting the capacity of those in a parenting role.
Our services include:
- Individual Family Support – home visiting & phone/email support
Supporting families & individuals to access service providers, gain parenting knowledge, providing resources, supporting implementation of programs from support services (eg: speech therapy) and accessing individual therapy (eg: art therapy, counselling) - Parenting Education & Support
Aim is to provide 12 workshops per year with a focus on early intervention and prevention. Topics will be identified through consultation with KI Children’s and Families Network Group, surveying families and consultation with other service providers. - Supported Playgroups
PKI will continue to provide qualified and experienced staff to support the playgroups across KI. The time/place of these groups will remain flexible to meet the needs of the community. Other services will be engaged to share information with the families who attend. - Resource Borrowing – toy library borrowing, parenting resources
Toy and parenting resources will be available online to families. - Service collaboration and networking
Parenting KI will continue to facilitate the KI Children’s and Families Network Group as well as being involved in the Interagency Team with Families SA, KICE Kidsmatter Action Team, KI Community Services Forum and other networks as necessary.
